GET TO KNOW AMBER

Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?

Although I don't have any experience working directly with a company within the industry, I've volunteered to work on multiple short films whenever the opportunity arose, one of those films being Odd Socks. Working on these projects has given me even more experience in various tasks, especially in keying and cleanups. I have strived to do this in my free time because I love being able to help bring independent visions to life, and I would love to be able to one day be able to help do that on a much larger scale in the industry.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

In our current group project, 'Socks To Be You', my role was to be one of the multiple Compositors. My main tasks during the project were to do cleanups and CG comp for the shots I'm responsible for. One of the shots I volunteered to take was particularly difficult to clean up, as there are tracking markers on a moving washing basket plus a few more dotted around the room. The film was shot on a low shutter speed, meaning lots of heavy motion blur and me having to track quite a few markers manually.

What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?

I specialise in Compositing, which I fell in love with during my first year. Ever since then, I had been completely fascinated by the art of "invisible VFX" and am always satisfied when comparing the results on one of my shots to the original backplate.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

Roto / Prep Artist, either in advertising or full feature length.

Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?

I'm torn between 'Kuru' and 'Socks To Be You'. 'Kuru' was seamless, an incredibly impressive feat for what was only a second-year group project. To this day, I still think of the process and the team very fondly, and have been fortunate enough to work with some of them again in later projects. 'Socks To Be You' has been a delight to work on, the story is fun, the work a good challenge, and I've been able to finally work with peers whose work I've admired for a long time.

What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?

'Poor Things' completely blew my mind when I first saw it, and quickly became one of my favourite films! Its implementation of VFX to help immerse you into the setting and overall aesthetic is unlike anything else I've seen in media - From the various landscapes and cities to the hybrid animals. I was fortunate enough to attend a talk about it at the VFX Festival last year.
