Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
I have not yet had any direct experience working in the industry, however, during my time at Escape, I have attended a variety of talks, workshops and presentations both virtually and in person from tutors, student assistants and industry professionals who helped deliver a good understanding of what can be expected of me within jobs as a VFX artist as well as similar roles while giving insight into the dynamics of projects that I could expect to find myself in. From the first year to the final year: I made sure to use these opportunities alongside my research into career paths, internships and relevant skills.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
While working on our last project, Set in Stone, I was one of the assigned 2D VFX artists who worked on the clean-up and CG comp. I have been happy with my work and organisation on the three shots I was assigned and when I had an ongoing issue during cleanup early on: I aimed to keep looking for methods that I could try until the problem was eventually fixed. In the future, I would still like to improve the quality of my work in my own time and perfect the CG comp while I have time to research and apply newly learnt methods.
From previous work as a producer, I learnt just how much spending extra time helping with additional tasks and supporting the ideas/organisation shared between colleagues vastly improved the efficiency, meeting our deadlines and our team's relationship. I really wanted to share my experience from previous projects so I took on extra tasks such as processing the HDRis and researching backup music options while there was not yet work set for me as well as helping the 2D+3D leads and the producer with any organisation to take off the pressure. From previous work as a producer, I learnt just how much spending extra time helping with additional tasks and supporting the ideas/organisation shared between colleagues vastly improved the efficiency, meeting our deadlines and our team's relationship. What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
For our individual specialism project, I chose to work on chroma keying as I wanted to teach myself how to work with greenscreen footage while also giving myself the additional goal of learning how to use Unreal Engine 5 and Nuke in tandem for compositing a background while, my chosen footage had a challenging top-down angle. I felt that working on those skills was very useful, not only for improving the diversity of my compositing skills but also for helping with discovering new tools and methods to use in other areas of work.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
A Junior Prep Artist or Runner
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
The first individual project during my second year is one of the projects I'm most proud of due to the quality of my combined efforts in both the 2D and 3D sides of VFX. From the start of my degree, I wanted to improve my understanding of other jobs within the VFX industry while also proving to myself an ability to understand how to work with a large array of programs; being able to follow the VFX pipeline while still maintaining a good level of quality and I felt like I achieved that with the outcome of my tracking, modelling, texturing, clean-up and compositing when placing a piano into footage of Butlers Wharf in London.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
The Love Death + Robots anthologies have inspired me a lot in terms of style and VFX, with examples of both stylised and realistic work (or sometimes the merging of both) throughout the series. It has definitely inspired me with it's explorative and experimental qualities as I feel that kind of exploration with work can bring a lot of unexpected delights.
