Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
Whilst I haven't had direct work experience in the VFX side of things, I have spent two weeks at Working Title as an editing trainee, which was a great starting point for me. I got to help with things like exporting footage, organising/logging shots on File Maker Pro, Backing up an entire film on a backup drive, and quality checking. I’ve also worked on a short film for a week on a very tight deadline, where I did green screen replacements and added 2d effects on AE for the director. On top of that, all my group projects at Escape have felt like mini studio experiences. I am working with different people, meeting tight deadlines, and constantly giving and receiving feedback.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In the projects 'Save Yourself' and 'Robotic Repairs', I mainly worked on roto and cleanup. For 'save yourself' I used tools like CopyCat to speed up the rotoscoping process and helped clean up shots to get them ready for comp. I also worked on CG integration for both projects to make sure everything fit together well visually. In my current group project, I cleaned up, created shadow clean plates, and neutralised HDRIs for the three shots I got allocated, making sure the lighting matched properly for the CG elements that I will be integrating after the easter holidays. I worked closely with the 2d team and made sure the 2D lead was happy with my work to make sure everything stayed consistent and looked good across the shots.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I specialise in 2D VFX because I genuinely enjoy the detailed, hands-on work that goes into things like rotoscoping, cleanup, and compositing. It’s really satisfying to help bring all the elements of a shot together and make it feel seamless. Once I started learning Nuke in first year and got into the flow of it, I just clicked with it and knew this was the area I wanted to focus on.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
Junior Compositor / roto/prep artist / Junior VFX artist
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
The project I’m most proud of is my second-year solo project, where I got to model, texture, and comp an abandoned mine site. I really enjoyed being able to use different software and take full creative control. It was one of the first times I got to fully build something from an idea in my head and turn it into a finished shot. Seeing it come to life on screen was such a rewarding moment.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
Inception
