Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
Whilst I haven't had any direct experience working within the industry, I have attended networking events in big studios such as Framestore and I have attended seminars and talks such as Escape Verse. These talks gave me the opportunity to talk to members of DNEG, ILM Nexus studios and many more. These experiences provided what I believe to be a good understanding of what is expected of me upon entering the industry.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In the project "Cursed Bond", I took the role of render wrangler and I also sculpted textured and completed the lookdev of the lizard bones. I used lots of references from different medical scans of actual lizard bones to complete my task. The skull of the lizard is a horned tail lizard without the horns and the body is like a gecko. As the render wrangler, I also lit the shots and made sure we had renders on time for comp to use. I ensured we had all the relevant AOVs and separated the CG and shadows into the relevant layers.
In the project "Set in Stone", my roles were lead lighting artist, render wrangler and match-mover, and I also modelled and textured the podiums of the male and female statues. I pushed myself to learn a bit of Substance Designer to create the moss textures on the podiums to match the backplate. I also pushed myself to learn about gobo lights to better integrate the CG into the project. I was quite proud of the lighting for " Set In Stone" as I originally wasn't fond of lighting and I wasn't confident as to whether I could pull it off. However, I now find that I actually enjoy lighting and I'm excited to learn more about it.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I chose to become a 3d generalist. This allows me to be able to learn about different areas in the pipeline and increase my knowledge and understanding within the different disciplines of VFX. I find that it is more fulfilling as I get to complete various tasks this way and I can continue learning not just about a specific field within VFX but a broader approach.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
My ideal first role in the industry would be a junior modeller/sculptor. I enjoy modelling and sculpting quite a bit. I do quite like lookdev, texturing and lighting as well. I also wouldn't mind being a production runner or an intern just to get experience within the industry.
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
I am extremely proud of "Cursed Bond", which won an award for best student film at the International Gold Awards this year. I am proud that we were able to face all the obstacles as a team and were able to deliver something we are proud of for submission. I am proud of all the new things I learnt whilst working on the project such as optimisation and rendering. It was also my first opportunity to sculpt and I really enjoyed that experience.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
The MCU was what drew me to film and VFX in the first place. As a child, I truly believed superheroes existed because of Sony's Spiderman and the MCU. The visual effects made me believe in magic, powers and mythical creatures and I want to share that childlike belief with other people when I eventually step into the industry and work on big-budgeted projects such as these. It was more than just art, VFX had the power to make the unimaginable imaginable and real which is what I found interesting about the entire field itself in the first place.
