Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
I took part in working on a short movie called ' Indepth ' as a compositor. In this project, we experimented with the Unreal node in Nuke to work directly from Unreal cameras. Once our shots were keyed, we used the Unreal node to match the correct backgrounds in Unreal.
I have done roto prep work for the short movie ' Al Termine della Notte '. I was responsible for cleaning up shots with people and cars in the background and shadows created from on-set equipment.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In our project ' Set in Stone', I was responsible for preparing plates and compositing. In my given shots, I cleaned up tracking markers and stands and neutralised HDRIs ready for the 3D team to use. I then integrated the CG with the live-action footage to match the final look of the shots.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I specialise in 2D VFX, compositing and roto/prep. I chose the path of a 2D VFX artist because I enjoy the process of being able to seamlessly create changes in plates and integrate CG to look realistic to the eye.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
Roto / prep
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
I am very proud of my third-year student project ' Save Yourself '. As a team, we worked well together which made the process of producing the short film a great experience. We were able to keep communication between the team clear and open, which made it easier to navigate problems and solve them together.
I am also proud of this project for the challenge I took on creating the environment for this short film. With only one prior experience in creating a matte painting in my first year of university, I felt that I was able to deliver a DMP suitable to match the environment we filmed and fit the story.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
I have always been interested in films and how they can take us to a different dimension. Watching live-action fictional films always made me wonder what was real and what was fake, it made me curious as to how they were made to look so realistic.
