GET TO KNOW KIA

Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?

I worked on a short film called ‘Odd Socks’ for Director, David Ledger, as a compositor, doing clean-ups of puppeteers and poles. This has given me excellent experience working on a professional production to generate ‘pixel perfect’ clean up, as well as gaining a greater understanding of delivering a high quality of work, the workflows and interacting with the client.
I also have a business in digital arts where I have worked with big names and big brands by following their brief and producing work which has given me a lot of time managing skills as I am working with brands and companies.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

I believe I played a big role in my last group project as I was director so I was responsible for the idea, creating storyboards, lighting choices and creating surreal effects in Nuke.
As well as working on compositing, I was also the grading artist for this project. I enjoyed having some freedom to generate a creative grade, by bringing that surreal aesthetic and making the CG assets glitch in to convey the story of memories coming to life. While also making sure the correct workflow for grading was maintained by neutralizing the plates beforehand and setting the ‘look’ of the CG assets in comp before the creative grade.

What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?

I’m confident in most compositing skills, but I specialize in creating seamless clean-ups and matte paintings. My creativity and experience with Photoshop allow me to bring a high level of precision to my work, making me a strong and reliable compositor.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

My ideal first role in the industry would be as a Junior Compositor in a small and fun community. I would like to be able to see the process of a production, and ideas come to life from start to finish. I would love to be able to meet new creatives and learn about their journey and their goals and aspirations. I am always open to working on a range of project types such as film, episodic or commercials that touch upon a broad range of mediums, such as Motion Graphics, Hand-Drawn FX, and unique visual effects that tell a story.

Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?

I am particularly proud of Vivid, the short film I wrote and directed, as it represents a significant investment of both creative vision and technical execution. As the director, I was responsible for overseeing the entire creative direction of the project, ensuring that my vision was effectively communicated to and executed by my team. This collaborative effort culminated in Vivid winning four awards within the first few months of its release, validating the dedication and hard work invested in the film. The success of this project is a testament to the creative and technical decisions made throughout its production.

What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?

I’d say Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had a major influence on me. With my background in compositing and VFX, I paid close attention to the film’s overall creative look. The Spider-Verse films changed the game for animation, especially with their use of hand-drawn effects and unique visual style. As an artist, I can truly appreciate the level of creativity and innovation that went into these films, and it’s had a big impact on how I approach my work.
