SHOWREEL

GET TO KNOW LARAIB

Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?

Although I haven't had any experience as of yet, I have attended talks and seminars, and Escapeverse this year from professionals who have wealth of experience in the industry. I believe they have given me a good understanding of what its like to work and how they progressed to where they are now, as well as how they achieved the look of the shots they worked on in their projects which again; helped me understood how to have a good eye for detail.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

For our project 'Socks To Be You', I am a 2D artist. I am responsible for prepping on two shots and setting up clean up template on my scripts, one of them being the final shot, given by my 2D lead. During this, I have gained feedback from my 2D lead on how to better my clean ups as it is one of the trickiest shots I've worked on so getting help on it has improved my clean up skills. As well as helping with shooting the shots of our project with the animation team has been fun as I got to hear from different perspectives on how some certain shots should look like instead. In my previous project 'Mini Mail', I was responsible for keying, rotoscoping, colour grading and for integrating the hero asset in the shot I was given. I made sure to keep communicating with my 2D lead on this as this is the shot where the hero asset first appears in the mini city, so it was important for me to get feedback on it.

What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?

I specialised in roto/prep and comp. I was suggested to do this specialism is because I am interested in colour grading and this specialism has helped me develop a good critical eye. During this, I also developed my problem-solving skills which I encountered during my specialism, especially with my clean ups and attempting to use different techniques, What I've learned during those 6 weeks is that its all about trial and error and to not be put off if it doesn't work as there are different ways to solving these problems whilst maintaining a good eye.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

My ideal first role would be either roto/prep or a junior compositing role in any studio. Any of these roles would help me further my technical skills and later on progress to higher roles within the industry. Gaining valuable experience in any size production house would help me grow as an artist overall.

Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?

Aforementioned, I am proud to have worked on 'Mini Mail'. It was one of the projects that was well executed, also maintaining the comedic feel to it, even with the time constraints we had and the problems we encountered during those three months. It felt rewarding to see our efforts being displayed in the final stages and during presentation. I felt that this project has pushed me out of my comfort zone and solved challenges I haven't faced in my previous projects at Escape. I'll carry the knowledge and skills I've gained during those three months in our first term and apply them to future projects.

What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?

After my specialism, seeing the breakdowns of 'Wicked' posted by Framestore has changed the way I think of my discipline. It was enticing to see how they enhanced the magic and realism of the environments in the film, and how they complemented and blended with the storytelling. Also seeing how important it is to make sure to have a good eye as you are responsible for the final look of the shot you're working on.
