Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
At this current time, I do not have any experience working in visual effects however I have attended many talks and masterclasses with industry professionals and have gained a good understanding of the pipeline. As well as that, I have had the experience of being on a film set for an upcoming film, where I got the opportunity to learn how film production works and was given a small acting role.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In the projects “Vivid” and “Night Terrors” I was a 2D Artist/ Compositor which meant I did jobs such as keying the green screen, rotoscoping, cleaning up tracking markers and labels on boxes and some comp work. Both projects helped me further develop my Nuke skills and build confidence in my ability as an artist. Working as a group also meant that I was able to work with my peers and tackle any problems we were having further building up my communication and teamwork skills.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I decided to specialise in 2D visual effects as I have always been really fascinated by the “hidden” aspects of film/tv that no one really notices. Getting to learn how to use Nuke has been a fun but challenging experience and overall very rewarding.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
I would really love to try something new and go into running for a studio or on set to gain more hands on experience in the industry. I feel this would really boost my confidence and be an amazing opportunity to get to know people and witness the pipeline first hand. This also gives me the opportunity to continue building up my VFX skills before entering a job in that field.
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
The project I am most proud of is “Vivid”. It was a challenging project that took a lot of time to come out of idea development and for us to feel confident as a team, but due to some incredibly hard work it has resulted in multiple awards at film festivals including ‘London Movie Awards’, ‘EE Film Fest’, ‘Milan Golf Awards’ and ‘Makizhmithran Fest’
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
The film that got me into Visual Effects in the first place was Disney Pixar’s ‘Coco (2017)’. At just 13 years old, I was completely blown away at how something could look so beautiful and tell such a personal and meaningful story. Talking about my love for this film in college gave me the most amazing opportunity to attend a press screening of Disney’s ‘Encanto (2021)’ and host a masterclass with producer Clark Spencer, where I got the opportunity to ask so many questions about the film. From this experience, I became really passionate about animation and visual effects and knew I wanted to be a part of the industry in the future.
