Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
After my first year, I was selected to be a Generalist TD (Sweatbox TD) at DNEG Animation. This was an unforgettable experience as after completing all training assignments 6 weeks early, I was able to contribute to the production of That Christmas feature animated film, receiving my own sequence! My role as Generalist TD is troubleshooting creative and technical shots issues from initial animation blocking all the way to final lighting, being involved with all areas of the pipeline and with all levels of artists. This experience has allowed me to build new connections working with industry professionals that have helped me understand new, more advanced techniques.
Outside of my studies, I have had the opportunity to freelance for brands such as the McLaren Formula One team, using Houdini and Maya to deliver two projects within a ten day deadline. Real world experiences like these where both me and the client are building the VFX really geared me in my multitasking and creative problem solving.
In May 2022 I graduated from the Technicolor (MPC) Lighting for VFX Academy. The intense and amazing 10 week experience tied together my passion for technology and photography. Naturally in the role of lighting artist, errors stemming from all stages of the pipeline will appear in the render, from textures to mesh, intersections, and optimisation. By the end of the ten week course, I’d had the opportunity to dive deep and explore all areas of the pipeline leading to the transition of becoming a generalist.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In this project my role was as 3D Lead, communicating with the director, production and 2D comp team whilst simultaneously supporting both 3D and FX artists and developing the pipeline. To create the photorealism style I use artistic and technical skills to work on all aspects of CG shots such as procedural FX, modeling, shading, texturing, lighting and rendering.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I’m a 3D Generalist with a focus on technical art involving Houdini and procedural workflows. Throughout my 2nd and 3rd year, I focused on developing my technical ability to learn VEX and Python languages. I also developed my understanding of procedural workflows; creating technical tools for creative artists. This includes a procedural snow generator that interacts with any environment and animation.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
3D Generalist TD / Houdini TD
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
I’m most proud of our final project, Set in Stone. Finally being able to work with animation and expand the pipeline has been a great challenge and an experience I’ve grown so much from personally and as a leader.
Being able to put forward 3 years of growth into our last film is a tribute to all the amazing talent of my peers and has motivated me to push my own expectations.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
Akira - A film that pushed the creative boundaries in traditional techniques as well as VFX. This experimental attitude reminds me to explore new VFX avenues and stay in touch with traditional art forms.
Invisible Man - Simplistic and effective use of visual effects to tell a story. This film made me be realistic with my own expectations - when everything is possible in VFX, use only what is needed to support the narrative. This has prevented me from biting more off than I can chew.
