Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
I have been working as a freelance photographer and videographer for various events and talent across London. This is great for practicing being client-forward and understanding creative delivery, as well as improving my eye for colour, composition, and visual storytelling.
I have also proactively attended talks to further my anecdotal knowledge of the industry. This is good for keeping up to date with the latest tools and techniques. As well as improving my understanding of the pipeline and what clients and superiors expect of me.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
On Vivid I was the sole FX lead, which meant I was responsible for doing all the dynamic elements for the whole sequence. We aimed to try and use the Polaroids as a character so their motion needed to reflect the tone of the moment. Getting them to tear up proved to be an interesting challenge. I was also responsible for the wallpaper peeling. I had to work very closely with 3D on that project because of anything that could interfere with the fight path of the Polaroids and had to keep my work very well optimized because we had to render out a minute's worth of a whole CG environment.
Also on this project, I used my cinematography knowledge to do a lot of second-unit filming, such as the credit sequence and eye shots.
On Socks to be You, I worked collaboratively as an FX artist. Our task was to use cloth simulations to improve the secondary motion of our hero sock. As well as tackle smaller tasks such as saliva, steam, and creating a clothes pile. The interesting thing about working on this project was working in such a large team with a relatively short time frame. This meant that me and Oliantai had to work collaboratively and efficiently.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I specialised in Houdini.
I like the fine balance of creativity and problem-solving that comes with Houdini, As an FX artist you also get that sweet dopamine hit when you get your flipbook back and it looks sick.
My two favourite things to do in Houdini are audio-reactive visuals and flip simulations. Music is a huge source of inspiration for me, I would love to do some concert/festival visuals at some point.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
FX Artist - Audio Visuals Artist
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
It's hard to pick favourites, I think I have enjoyed a lot of projects for different reasons.
I feel like in terms of technical achievement Vivid has a lot of my best work in it. I think the FX and second unit stuff really added a lot to the overall look of that film.
The team from Project BB has stuck together since which is really cool to see, it's great to see everyone on the team remaining great friends.
The most fun I have had during a project was definitively my 3rd-year specialism in music visuals, I really enjoyed the opportunity to try new features and play around with multiple setups and techniques.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
DISCO ELYSIUM,
Honestly, the game is stunning in every aspect, the impressionist style really gives fascination to every environment and detail. HOWEVER, THE STORY, BRILLIANT despair has never been captured so well by any other medium. There are times in the game when you're made to feel dirty and corrupted by your conscious and unconscious actions. You're unable to avoid your past and shortcomings to it becomes a narrative about how you choice to interpret them. Even your internal dialectic acts as an advisor and saboteur in your quest to get your life back on track. Honestly never cried, laughed, and fallen into a contemplative stupor more than during that game.
