GET TO KNOW OLIANTAI

Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?

I have 10+ years of work experience in customer service operations. This contributed immensely to many abilities, the most relevant being for this particular instance, the ability to communicate things clearly and in a professional and respectful manner.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

My role was that of the FX Artist. I was responsible for the cloth simulations applied to our character in the film. For this, I built an effective set-up in Houdini, with which I could paint areas that I wanted to simulate and control them with different attribute values to achieve the desired look for the fabric.

What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?

I specialise in FX, currently using Side FX Houdini. I chose this specialism because it lets me create anything I want. Within this software and the realm of FX, I can iterate and create something new every time, but most importantly, there is so much to learn within this realm and software, that I will be able to learn every day.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

The ideal first role in the industry for me would be that of an FX Artist using Houdini.

Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?

I am most proud of the 3D and 2D compositing module we had in the 2nd year because it involved creating a full visual effect shot from tracking to modelling and compositing, and it allowed me to work on and perfect my lighting and compositing skills that I very much like working on. The other project that I am most proud of is the magic effect that I did on Cursed Bond, our 3rd-year group project, because it works very nicely in the film and adds beauty to it. I was also able to bring the director's vision of the effect to life and that is an achievement for me. I am very proud of our film currently in production as well.

What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?

In recent years, there was a lot of outstanding visual effects work being produced, but for someone who loves Water FX, the one that opened my eyes in terms of what is achievable, was definitely Avatar: The Way of Water. I think what is changing the most in the way I think about my discipline are the new technologies that are coming out every day that are constantly evolving in our industry.
