SHOWREEL

GET TO KNOW CATHERINE

Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?

Though I haven't been able to gain any work experience within the industry yet I have been sure to attend events like the "Bring Your Own Animation" meet up and the various talks held at Escape Studios. With the knowledge I've gained from these talks and my experience both working as a team member and director in various group projects, I believe I have a strong idea of what would be expected of me in the industry.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

In my current group project "AFK" my role is that of the editor where I am in charge of putting clips together and making sure everything flows together once assembled. In previous projects I have been tasked as Director such as in "The Beak" and "Unfamiliar", as well as storyboarding in "Countdown". In these roles I was in charge of the visual storytelling of the projects which often led to me drawing out a detailed animatic from the start so the films can be planned in advance. For me planning is crucial when it comes to both animating and storytelling as you can find and solve complications early on having a strong foundation to build upon. However I have also learned to be more flexible both when directing and editing through my time at Escape which I am very thankful for.

What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?

Having been practising storyboarding for a long time before coming to Escape, I chose to specialise in it. I have a passion for storyboarding due to its ability to tell visual stories quickly and efficiently. I also chose this to try and push my skills as a Storyboard Artist further, breaking away from my comfort zone. Whilst my work is usually cartoony, comedy styled storyboards, for this specialism I focused on a style closer to semi-realism with longer dialogue scenes. This was to broaden my horizons, because while I believe it's important to do what you're passionate about, I also think that must come with a strive to push further and better your skills.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

3D TV Animation

Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?

"Unfamiliar", this film was an absolute joy to work on and a time when I saw both my storyboarding and directing skills grow from my last attempt at Directing. With "Unfamiliar", we were able to tell a story with a stop-motion inspired style, having trees seeming to be made out of cardboard and animation with a semi-stepped look. This all came together thanks to our team clicking, everyone being passionate about both the story of the witch and her cat, alongside the visual appeal of the piece.

What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?

For me, the animation that convinced me to step into this medium wasn't a film or TV show, despite that being the industry I am most interested in working for, but a game franchise called Guilty Gear. Whilst studying a game design course, I delved into my love for a game I played called "Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator" and found myself paying attention to the way it's animated more than anything else. The way the game played with frame rates and used 3D animation to create such expressive characters drew me in and sparked my passion for animation for the first time.
