GET TO KNOW CHARLIE
Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
Whilst I have no direct experience with a studio, I have attended talks from industry professionals as well as worked on a year long project in my third year that I feel gave me good baseline knowledge for when I enter the industry.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In the project, Shapla, I took on the role of producer as well as animator and clean up artist. I was responsible for organising our team, their workload, and ensuring we kept on track in order to complete the film. I either created or maintained various spreadsheets for us to visually see our progress, keeping morale up as we progressed. This gave me a really valuable insight into what it takes to work with and manage a group which I feel has done a lot in terms of preparing me for work in the industry.
I also worked on the animation and a lot of the clean up work. This gave me a really good look at how both roles think and go about their work. For example, to match the style of the film, I had to very closely pay attention to how my director animated in order to match her style and keep consistency across the film.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I specialised in Storyboard art as I have always loved coming up with quick ideas that can then be further developed. I enjoy working to a brief and using my own creativity to bring to life a script, as well as working with directors to bring their vision to life.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
Storyboard Revisionist or Cleanup Artist
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
The project I am most proud of is Shapla. I was very heavily involved in the pre-production and visual development stage which got me heavily attached to the characters and world we were building. It was also the project I learned the most on in terms of how to work well with a group and just my foundational animation knwoledge.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
Arcane had a huge influence on me. Despite the fact I was doing 2D animation, the subtle facial animations they can achieve give so much more context and character to the show and largely changed the way I went about my character acting. I also had the privilege to see a lot of the Arcane storyboards and was amazed by how they were done, spending time studying them for my specialism.
