GET TO KNOW ERICA
Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
Recently I have been confirmed a summer internship with ‘Kingbee’. An animation studio in London which I am very ecstatic to be joining.
Besides this, the closest work experience I have had that would relate to this would be my 2 consecutive summers at a graphic design internship where I helped create logos, brochures, website design and more for luxury brands.
Additionally, I have experience in animation from working on various different projects, both personal and academic, the most recent one being ‘Shapla’.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
When working on 'Shapla', since our team was quite small, I took on more than one role. As well as being art director, I was also assigned as the vfx artist and animator, background artist and also helped with character and environment design.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I specialise in visual development and recently vfx animation. The reason I chose to pursue this as my career, was when I discovered how much I enjoy the creation of characters and stories, being able to be creative in so many ways and being a part of something that creates communities where everyone shares their common interest and passion for a specific franchise.
Vfx on the hand, was something very out of the blue. I tried it out and realised I really enjoyed it. Unlike character animation, where you create key-poses and then fill in with inbetweens, vfx allows you to have much more flexibility and has a freeing aspect to it. Many times you are able to animate as you go and what feels right for whatever vfx you are animating.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
Concept art and/or Visual Development. Any role where you would study a story through illustrations.
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
The most recent project I am working on ‘Shapla’, would definitely be the project I am most proud of. This project not only has a compelling story that when pitched I immediately fell in love with, but also has great meaning and message behind it. I also saw my artistic skills grow so much throughout this project and discovered new passions and talents.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
I might be biased because this is quite recent, the recent series ‘Arcane’ made my passion for animation grow even more. All the intricate details included in the show from the animation style to the choice of animating in different frame rates to portray a change in ambience and emotions, was really inspirational and eye opening to the endless possibilities on how one can be creative with animation.
