GET TO KNOW ERIK
Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
So far I've mainly attended social events/conferences that involved talks from companies giving insight on their work processes whilst also getting the chance to meet fellow new animators. The 2 events that mainly come to mind are the yearly 'Rainbow Conference' from 'London ACM Siggraph' and also their 'Bring your Own Animation' get togethers where you get to meet new people and gain feedback from industry professionals. I've improved upon both my soft and artistic skills since attending these.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
My latest project 'Socks to be You', led me to being the producer of the group. The task to oversee and manage the smooth transition of work between animation and visual effects teammates was crucial, therefore maintaining a constant friendly exchange of communication and deadlines remained paramount. One half of it was team anim and the other vfx, it was the first time for both of us working with a different department and not just our own. This meant I had to understand the vfx pipeline enough that I could mediate relations between all of us. A major but quick time period was the shoot, where I organised a day with an independent business for us to film our backplate on their location that is seen in our film.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
It's video game animation. Back in September in our professional practice module, one of the first tasks was to decide our industry combo and to me it was 3D Animation and Games. Beforehand I was unsure as to whether it was film, tv, or games that I wanted to set my initial sights on. It was mostly just a feeling, but games felt to be the way to go, partly for it being my main hobby and partly for having been the Technical Director for 'Unfamiliar' in the beginning of the year and spending so much time in Unreal 5 and the sequencer.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
Gameplay or Cinematic Animator
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
Unfamiliar', the fluidity of team work and work progression between everyone made it a very pleasant experience. Getting to practice with Unreal 5 was also very helpful.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
It's quite a couple of videos from an animator called Alessandro Camporota. Getting to learn about his experience as an up and coming animator through his videos, and then somewhat understanding his work discipline towards himself and his students was 'The' catalyst for me to establish a sense of direction and goal with my own work.
