GET TO KNOW ERMINAS
Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
I have not had the chance to gain any real experience within any company yet, though I have been to events and talks that offer time to speak to a variety of companies to gain insight into their work and how they operate. These talks helped me understand what is required of me to focus on to achieve a position in the industry.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In the project Reconnected, I was one of the previs artists, ensuring the layout and blockout of each shot in that short film. I had a direct connection to every shot whilst working with a storyboard provided, so I was very involved in the process of the blockout stage. I worked closely with the Director and storyboard artist to ensure that the previs looked appealing.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I currently specialise in Character Animation. This may come across as plain and basic, but as I delve into the different areas of animation, I am finding enjoyment in all aspects of it. Ranging from lip-syncing to the facial expressiveness of a character to even constraining and using weapons!
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
My ideal first role within the industry would have to be a Junior 3d Animator. I wish to gain as much experience as I can and grow within the industry.
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
I would have to say I am most proud of my first-ever student project, called "Checkmate". My first role within a group project was a Producer, and even though most of us did not know what our roles meant or what to do, we all managed to create a piece of work that ended up winning 4 awards! Even though it was our first project ever, it ended up winning the most awards in a project that I've been a part of. The whole experience in that first project was outstanding. I was learning more about the pipeline than I ever did, and chasing deadlines, group meetings, dailies for our shots reviews and overall feedback helped me grow in the next few projects. I dove with the knowledge I needed to succeed because, at the end of that project, I knew what I was getting into and knew what to do.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
Watching Arcane was an eye-opener in conveying emotion and bringing the story to a character. Each character that was shown had a history and their own story. The way Arcane dived into them and showcased them was nothing more than phenomenal. Before Arcane, I never imagined that you could go to such depths with a character as Vi or Jinx. But there was also a game that helped me find a passion for animation and story-telling itself. Ghost of Tsushima, the way that game conveys the history, rules and overall story was nothing but extraordinary. The cinematics in that game were certainly something that I'd love to get into.
