GET TO KNOW GUSTAV

Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?

I have been working as a freelance illustrator for almost half a decade where I have created both professional and personal art for dozens of clients online. In previous years, I have worked on an artbook for the indie game 'No Straight Roads', as well as various other fan artbook projects. Currently, I work as the promotional illustrator for the band Holding Absence, in which I have worked on T-shirt designs as well as posters for their upcoming tours, I am also currently working on an animated visualiser for their new music within the following months.

As of yet I have not had any experience in the professional animation industry, however I have a lot of experience within the art industry already and am familiar with the proceedings that come with it. I aim to branch my work out into animation within the next few years.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

As the art director of 'Keep Cooking', my role was to land on a specific design and style that the movie would inherit. The film's intial premise was to be a restaurant in the snow, so I drew a lot of inspiration from my time living in Sweden as well as the game Monster Hunter World. I wanted the film to have a comforting feel to it, so I kept an eye on how the character designs, animation and colours were shown in the movie and gave feedback to other teamates in order to keep each aspect consistent throughout the film. As well as this, I worked on the majority of the backgrounds of the movie, as well as roughed out several of the shots.

What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?

I am definitely a character specialist. I've always enjoyed creating characters with a strong sense of design and animation that brings a brand new layer of life into my work. This past year I have focused on shifting my drawing process from fitting the illustration pipeline to the animation pipeline; I have worked quite hard to mould myself into a different niche.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

Ideally any position that allows me to learn and improve as an animator. The process of learning and growth has always been the most important for me.

Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?

I would say this current project, 'Keep Cooking', has been the one where everything clicked for me. I've enjoyed the process of animating as a group and I am quite impressed with the movie that has come out of this. I am really proud of my teamates efforts who have covered for me in times where I fell short and vice versa. It's really been an enjoyable project throughout the past year.

What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?

I have always loved the video game Hollow Knight due to the fact that the game was created by only four people and only a single person created all the art assets by hand. The team behind the game work very hard to create a rich and beautiful game, but they also take their time. It's definitely taught me that as much as deadlines matter, it's important to take a step back and spend a little more time to reassess your work.
