GET TO KNOW HOLLY
Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
I have an ongoing commission for a local authority, creating promotional videos/adverts that are 2D animated. While not 3D, I am the sole person working on the project and so have had to manage every part of the pipeline myself. Including but not limited to; character design, character sheets, storyboards, animatics, animation, clean up and editing. It has also allowed me to gain experience in working for a client who may not know the technicalities of the animation pipeline. I have learned the skills necessary for getting feedback on my work and applying it to changes on the project to meet the client's needs.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In the project 'Set in Stone', I had the role of Art Director. This was my second time in the role so I started by clearly mapping out the ideas the Director had, and transforming those into an array of mood boards that could assist with the visual growth of the project. I gathered references for each part of the project from the statues, to how the cracks on them would look. Additionally, I also created mood boards and reference sheets to help with the artistic grade of the film.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I decided to specialise in procedural animation. I have an interest in game animation and thought that procedural animation would be a good way to explore it. It was a way of animating that was entirely new to me. I chose to use Unreal Engine for my specialism and use blueprints to create an animation that can adapt in real time to the environment and a player's input. Since then I have discovered a love for many types of animation, even recently having a go at learning and using cloth simulation to animate the clothes on characters I have animated.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
Games Animator or Character Animator
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
I am most proud of the group project 'Order Up'. Not only was it my first group project but it was also my first time being an Art Director. Order Up was such an experimentative and stylistic film that as Art Director I got to explore and experiment with the way the film looked visually. I also helped in asset making and did the majority of the film's textures, of which I even made custom textures to replace ones we already had to better fit the film. We took a lot of inspiration from comic books, New York City and vintage pizzerias. It had a bold look that was extremely fun to develop and work on. While I think my animation has improved considerably since that project, I still think as a whole it was the film I am most pleased with, and the one that left the greatest impact on me as an aspiring animator.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
Arcane, not only did it inspire me to pick up animation, the impression it left on me can be seen in all of my projects. Whether the animation itself or the props and textures I created for the films having taken inspiration from Arcane for the painterly textures in both 'Order Up' and 'Unfamiliar', it has shown me new ways to visually define the things I work on.
