GET TO KNOW MAI

Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?

I have yet to experience working in the industry. However, I have networked with many people working in the industry, attended workshops and visited a few animation events. I have gained great insight into the field of 2D animation.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

In the project, 'Keep Cooking', my role was to be the Producer and Animator. As a Producer, I kept my team on schedule by creating several Gantt charts using Google sheets. I set tasks and due dates for each member. This kept the project's production organised. As a Character Animator, I followed the Art Director's module sheets and was receptive to feedback given by the Lead Animator.

What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?

I chose to specialise in character animation as I wanted to experiment with exaggerating actions using more anticipation or squash and stretch. I enjoy creating my own characters and practicing animation tests with them. I am pursuing the career of a Character Animator. Animating human or creature movements is challenging yet rewarding for me.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

Junior Animator

Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?

The project I am most proud of is 'Keep Cooking'. I have improved my skills heavily with the help of Rebecca Perrone. This short film consisted of eight months, which has been the longest production time we have had. The members have been a pleasure to work with and our passion to keep learning truly shows through this final project.

What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?

An animated film that fascinated my younger self was Ponyo. I have always had a love for aquatic life. Seeing all the animated sea creatures and foliage looked amazing. I would say that had a huge impact on my decision to animate.
