GET TO KNOW MAISY
Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
Although I haven't yet worked directly in the animation industry, I feel that the experience I have gained working on my group projects has set me up well to start working as an animator. I do however work on commissions to draw original characters for various private clients. I receive around 20 commissions a month on average alongside my studies, where I communicate regularly with my clients to ensure the illustrations meet their briefs.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In Set in Stone, I was Lead Animator and a Concept Artist. As Lead Animator, my role involved creating test animations to show how the statue would be moving according to the Director's vision. The Director had a very specific type of movement in mind, where the statue feels heavy and jerky as it struggles to move. I also would give feedback on animators' shots, and before sending off shots to render, I went into all shots and polished them where needed to ensure that they looked seamless and matched the style of the overall film.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I specialise in 3D character and creature animation. Ever since I was little I found myself making stop motions with toys I had and flipbooks out of the corners of my school books, so I've always enjoyed making things move and bringing characters to life. I chose 3D animation in particular because I like being able to 'physically' move parts while being able to see the result of what I'm doing instantly.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
Ideally I would like to work as a Junior Character (or creature) Animator.
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
I am most proud of The Fairy Tree since it was a project that I wrote and directed myself. I was inspired by the look of Peter Pan (2003) and I feel that we were able to create the magical atmosphere in that film like I had wanted.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
Spiderverse was a film that initially inspired me to work in animation, and since then Arcane has been a huge source of inspiration for me. Overall the recent trend of merging 2D and 3D animation has made me feel that 3D animation doesn't have to look a certain way, and can be used creatively to make something beautiful to watch.
