GET TO KNOW NATHAN
Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?
Although I have no official professional experience, I have been actively developing my abilities and experience through my education and personal projects. As a 2D animation student, I completed several short animations as part of my education, which included everything from concept creation and storyboarding to character design and final animation with tools such as Clip Studio Paint, Toon Boom Harmony, and TV Paint.
I've also worked with classmates on group assignments, which helped me improve my teamwork and time management abilities. Outside of class, I enjoy making animations for social media and participating in online animation challenges, which allows me to practise and improve my technique on a regular basis.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In 'Keep Cooking', I served as director, storyboard artist, and animator, overseeing the production from concept to completion. The concept was inspired by Monster Hunter World's hunter-cook relationship, which shaped the story's tone and character roles.
As director, I oversaw the team's creative direction and assisted in organising production tasks. I created storyboards to establish pace, emotion, and visual flow, and then animated essential moments to bring our characters and setting to life. This project gave me the opportunity to combine leadership with hands-on animation work, borrowing inspiration from a game I enjoy to create a distinctive and entertaining short.
What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?
I specialise in 2D animation, particularly character animation and storytelling. I've always been fascinated by movement's expressive power—how subtle motions or exaggerated actions can bring a character to life and convey emotion.
Growing up, I saw animated shows and games with powerful, stylised 2D designs, which inspired me to pursue this career path. I was amazed by how these characters felt genuine even in odd settings.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
2D Character Animator
Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?
I'm most proud of the student project I directed, 'Keep Cooking'.
What separates it for me is how we combined storytelling, humour, and action, pulling inspiration from the hunter-cook relationship in Monster Hunter World. Balancing leadership and hands-on animation work was a difficult task, but watching the end result come together as a collaborative effort was extremely fulfilling. It definitely challenged my abilities and demonstrated what I'm capable of when I'm passionate about a story.
What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?
The original Teen Titans series was one piece of media that had a significant impact on how I perceived animation. It combined action, drama, and comedy in a unique and stylised manner, demonstrating how 2D animation could balance fun and serious content in a single episode.
What struck me most was how expressive the characters were, not just through words, but also through movement and body language. That greatly influenced my idea of how strong animation can be in interacting with an audience, and it is a major reason why I opted to specialise in 2D animation myself.
