SHOWREEL

GET TO KNOW SHEKINAH

Can you describe the extent of any relevant work experience you might have?

I have yet to have had direct experience working within industry, however I have attended talks of, and spoken to, members of the industry which have provided me a good understanding of what will be required of me concerning different roles when entering the industry, such as a concept artist either for environment design, prop design, or character design, and as 2D character animator.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

In the Student Film project 'Shapla', my role was a Background Artist. The film is set in an environment based on Bangladesh fresh water swaps, working closely with the Director and Art Director of my team, I adapted the art style from the style frames of early development and provided background assets for several shots.

What do you specialise in and what made you choose that specialism?

I specialised in 2D Character Animation. I chose this specialism because I wanted to be able to animate characters with dynamic and flowing movement. I picked this specialism on a whim of proving something to myself, since I have somewhat of a dream to make my own short film.
In current time, I retrospectively realise I should specialised in background art, however, I had gotten too far into 2D Character Animation to change that choice.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

Background Artist

Which of your student projects are you most proud of, and why?

I have four: 'Shapla', 'Kueh', 'The Loft', and my Advanced Specialism in 2D Character Animation.

In both Student Films, 'Shapla' and 'Kueh', I was a designated background artist, and in 'Kueh', I was the sole Background Artist. I was able to do a lot more research into the story's environment, working with the director since the concept art of the environment and prop design, as well as being the Lead Prop Designer where I lead the secondary Prop Designer, was based on the cultural history of rural Malaysian households. For 'Shapla', apart from what I have already spoken of, I was able to hone down more skills and solely focus on adapting an art style. 'The Loft', was a project that fell through, but similarly to 'Kueh', I was able to enjoy the work for visual development and concept art.

I am proud of my Advanced Specialism Study in 2D Character Animation because I have always wanted to improve on and be able to create frame by frame dynamic and flowing character animations. This is a huge achievement for me. And I got to experiment on character designs as well, and animate with complex character designs. It has taken me a step closer to creating my own short film.

What’s a piece of media (film, game, animation) that changed the way you think about your discipline?

It's hard to say, at this current time a lot of Visual Development Artists who worked with season 2 Arcane have been able to post their work and it has simply inspired me into knowing I need to learn a lot more about concept art in background design. And speaking to these members of the industry through LinkedIn, they have given me great tips in where to focus into. No single piece of media, be it from films or games or animated series, has challenged me alone. Every time I see work produced from the industry, I yearn to learn from it and find a way where I can recreate it, to learn the skills to have the same level of work for any new work.
